No Stinking Ads!

On my site you will find ABSOLUTELY NO ADS of any kind. Also, while my site has thousands of external links, (mostly to Wikipedia for song, artist, composer, etc. information,) none of the links are revenue generating. I've tried to only link to sites, such as Wikipedia, that are not overrun by ads.

Face it folks, Click Bait has taken over the web. I realize that companies and web sites need to generate revenue to keep going, but the situation has gotten completely out of hand. I don't really mind unobtrusive ads much that stay out of the way of the reason I'm visiting the site, but half the time the stinking ads are covering up why I'm there.

For example, I was just trying to check the weather and instead I've got a video ad running on top of the forecast that I couldn't get rid of! Out of curiosity, I let it run for ten minutes and all that came up was one continuous barrage of ad videos that couldn't be stopped. I never did see the forecast - and I'll never go back to that site.

I've set up a monitor on my downstream bandwidth and more than 98% of what comes through the pipe isn't useful content - it's static ads and one ad video after ad video after ad video - all of it for products I would never buy. All of the sites have been taken over by click bait.

Go to any "news" site and three quarters of the listings are "sponsored" and mostly have nothing to do with the subject of the site. What kind of total moron thinks that while I'm browsing the sports scores I'm going to have an overpowering urge to see what the latest over the hill actress now looks like?

Suppose you went to a brick and mortar store for the specific point of purchasing something. At the front door, you are not allowed to enter until you have watched a video of the virtues of coming to the store. No real store would do that - and yet how many online merchants clutter up their "stores" with ads for their store. Folks - forget the ad and get the crap out of my way - I'm already here - just let me buy what I came for!

Try another scenario at a physical store. You drive into the parking lot and are told that you can't enter the store until you've given them your name and e-mail so they can flood your inbox - and sell your info to anyone and everyone. Yet how many websites do exactly that? Or how many times do you find that you can't get any information about a product without "registering" first?

How about this? You go to your local appliance store to buy a washer and dryer. You ask the price and are told, "You'll have to load them onto a cart and take them up to the cash register to get the price." But that is exactly what so many web merchants do. If you complain, you'll get some song and dance about "it's a requirement from the manufacturer." I worked for one of the largest retailers on this planet and that is total nonsense. When you see, "Add to shopping cart to see price," what they are really telling you is, "Go find an honest retailer instead of a scam artist."
