I can't remember if I ever heard this song before it became a "standard" for the University of Texas Longhorn Band at football games. Darrel Royal was a country music fan and asked Vincent R. DeNino, the band director, to find something "country" to play at the games. This was the result. If you've never heard it played at DKR Memorial Stadium, you need to add it too your bucket list.
I don't know if they ever play it anymore, but another band favorite for me was their rendition of the march from Patton.
On Sunday mornings, you could often find Darrel Royal at Cisco's for breakfast. Might find a governor there, too. It was a legendary hangout way back when.
The Southside Market in Elgin was also a frequent haunt for their sausage. By the way, Elgin is pronounced with a hard G. Other Austin area ism's are Coupland pronounced Copeland and Manchaca pronounced "Man Shack."
