One of my very first favorites - it was a piano song - and it was an instrumental. Something I could play and make sound like what I heard on the radio! Except that the available sheet music was a simplified piano solo and didn't sound anything like Floyd Cramer.
My older brother was off at college and we went to see him one weekend. He and I ended up at music store in Austin - it wasn't Strait Music - some other place on maybe 6th street. Anyway, while we were there, a customer came in and played Last Date like Floyd Cramer played it. I'm sure I annoyed the daylights out of the guy, but he showed me how Cramer did the "slipped" grace notes to get his distinctive style. It took me months to work it out, but in time I could do a fair rendition.
Oddly enough, I got similar help at a music store in Victoria. My Mom had a doctor's appointment of some kind and the music store was right next door. I was prowling around it when I heard What'd I Say being played by yet again a customer. Who I of course, hounded until he helped me work out Ray's amazing syncopation.
I have no idea who those two guys were, but wherever they are, or wherever their shades are, "Thanks!"
