The first time I heard a Beatles song was early 1964. We were in the gym lounging in the bleachers - probably waiting on basketball practice considering the time of the year - and one of the guys had a portable radio playing. I asked who and what the song was. I was pretty underwhelmed at their "almost" live performance and simple orchestration. I was a big fan of Chuck Berry's Riffs and Chords and The Beach Boys' Wall of Sound. So the Beatles with two guitars, a bass, and drums didn't make much of an impression. It was quite a few songs down the road before I began to appreciate them - I think maybe Birthday was the turning point.
