I was in the Navy when the Kinks came out with Lola. Like the rest of the federal government, the Navy has it's only lingo for everything - particularly base and port names. Pearl Harbor is never anything but Pearl. Great Lakes is Glakes. Key West is Kwest. Guantanamo is Gitmo, Diego Garcia in the middle of the Indian Ocean is DG. And - New Orleans, LA becomes N O L A, or Nola to rhyme with Lola. When we heard the song, we liked the music, but not the lyrics. So the song became "Nola" with our own highly obscene (as only sailors can do) lyrics to sing over the top of The Kinks. I'm about the last one left, so that's one of the things that will thankfully disappear forever when I'm gone.
